Hi everyone! Well, we survived the Nor’easter and are expecting another big snow storm tonight! Don’t worry, I have my storm chips (although next week I have to get back to better eating habits) and my kids will be going to bed tonight wearing their pyjamas inside out and backwards.
This is a big step for me today revealing one of my “darkest” secrets, but in doing so, you may relate or find my confession helpful?! So here it is…….I AM A CHEAPSKATE! It’s true. I LOVE saving money! I get a total adrenaline rush when I spot a deal! I get giddy when I see 50% off!!! I can’t resist a bargain! Now, this is totally different from a penny pincher. I like to shop, but mostly buy things on sale or figure out a way to save on full priced items. I’m one step away from a “couponer” but don’t have the patience or organizational skills to commit. 😉 Today, I’m going to share some of my favourite “cheapie hacks” with you!
Now, this is on the “down low” but, every Friday night I get a pizza from my favourite pizza place Pomodori. The pizza I like best is a monthly special and not always on the menu, so, I order a plain cheese pizza and put my own toppings on it! When my husband, the human calculator did the math, I’m actually saving about 300.00 bucks a year!
O.k. saving money this way may not be for everyone, but buying a plain cheese pizza and adding your own toppings is easy to do. Pre heat your oven on 400 and have your toppings ready. We usually have to heat up our pizza anyway, so adding my own toppings and throwing the pizza in the oven for 5 minutes is no big deal. Plus, I can add as many toppings as I like for the fraction of the price!!!
My second cheapie hack is a good one!!! I repurpose my fabric softener sheets!!Instead of throwing them away after use, I use them as duster cloths! Once they have been through the dryer a few times, they become soft and clingy. Unfortunately they aren’t large, but one small cloth can easily dust surface areas, especially black electronics where you see dust easily.
O.k. My second deep dark secret….I don’t do my nails as often as I should! 😉 Imagine how much money you can save never buying expensive swifter dusters! I bet you could use them on the end of your sweeper also?! Haven’t tried that one yet.
Now on to the fun cheapie hacks! How to shop like a cheap skate!? My favourite bargain store is Winners. I cant remember the equivalent store in the US, but it’s a designer discount store. IMPORTANT, the real deals are mostly on the discount shelves at the back of the store. Another important tip when bargain shopping is to go when you have time. You can’t rush the process. Most deals are hiding at the back. Here is my latest find!!! Take a close look at this very large champagne bucket!
Did you notice anything “off”? So it’s missing a handle……BUT it was $160.00off the original price!!!!! Also, don’t be afraid to haggle the manager down if the item is damaged! I don’t think my champagne drinking guests will even notice, and if they do, who’s going to judge me??? No one’s going to say, “nice party but I can’t believe she served us champagne from a bucket missing a handle”. Don’t be afraid to buy things that are broken, scratched or missing handles if the defect doesn’t affect the function of the product. Often you can clean, touch up, hide or fix it!
Did I need a huge champagne bucket right now? No, but in the Summer this baby will get a lot of use!!! I usually wait until after each Holiday to buy decor for the next year. I also found these crystal candle sticks for $15.00 each.
Cheapskate hack # 4! The best place to find good stuff for cheap is at Value Village and church sales!!!!
My latest find for $1.00 each! Found at a church sale.
How cute are these precious old prints?!!! Each car has it’s name and date built underneath the sketch. One has a bit of water damage, but again, who’s going to notice or care? I’m going to paint the frames grey and find a special place for my vintage treasures! Another church sale find! These old books for $15.00!!! My elephants were found at a charity silent auction and were originally lamps, now repurposed into book ends! See how it works!
For fear of running out, I would give my gum mooching friends half a stick!!! I discovered who needs a full stick of gum?? Do you really want to be chomping on a wad of gum when you really only need a small piece to freshen breath? Yes, I still only chew half a stick and a pack lasts me twice as long!!! So there you have it! Feels good to get it all off my chest! I’m a cheapskate and I know it! Hitting the publish button now before I chicken out! Please don’t judge! Your comments make my day! Better yet, I would love for you to subscribe to my blog!!!!
