I immediately fell in love with our home at first sight! The original ginger bread trim and steep pitch roof design of this victorian cottage was my dream home. Although my husband was reluctant to purchase a high maintenance historical home, I think he’s come around? 😉 The previous owners, now sadly passed, painted the cottage in delightful historical colours authentic to the time period of 1859. Although we liked this colour combination, we decided to paint the exterior to reflect our style.
Deciding what colour to paint was difficult. At first, I wanted to restore the cottage it’s original colour white. After noticing both the church to the left and our neighbours to the right had white exteriors, I thought against it. Green was another choice, however, with so many trees on our lot, I was worried the house would blend in. Although we have many yellow houses on our road and a gorgeous yellow house across the street, yellow being my favourite colour, was the best choice! I chose a historical paint from Ben Moore called Hawthorne Yellow and went with a crisp white, Ben Moore Chantilly Lace for the trim.
The completed Exterior
The shutters and doors painted Ben Moore Wrought Iron add contrast against the yellow but tie in with the wrought iron fencing.
A closer look at the shutters and the original trim. The small oval window was installed during our renovation in a new bathroom we plumbed. Luckily the desired spot for the bathroom window was centre between the two existent windows. If not, installing a window in the shower would not have been possible as it would have looked “off” from the exterior view.
The crab apple tree is in bloom!
I love the pops of pink!
